About Scarfhold
Pattern-led apparel, built a little differently.
Scarfhold is an independent apparel project, established in 2017, built around a simple idea: pattern should do more than decorate a garment.
Scarfhold’s Patterns are developed in-house and form a design library unique to the store.
It began with camouflage — not as military costume, but as a way of thinking about form, visual structure and how clothing interacts with the body.
From there, the idea expanded.
Today Scarfhold develops camouflage, botanical, geological, geometric, abstract and other Pattern families, exploring them through different colour systems and garment types.
The result is a growing catalogue built more like a design library than a conventional seasonal collection.
Made for doing everything, or absolutely nothing.
From architecture to apparel
Scarfhold grew out of an architectural way of thinking.
Structure matters. Repetition matters. Scale matters. The relationship between one element and the next matters.
Those same instincts transfer surprisingly well to textile design.
A Pattern is considered as an object in its own right: its rhythm, density, movement, balance, negative space and the way it might eventually translate from a flat surface onto a moving body.
Colour is treated as a separate design layer rather than something permanently fixed to the Pattern.
That distinction is now built into the way Scarfhold develops its catalogue: the Pattern carries the underlying structure, the Palette carries the colour system, and the finished garment brings the two into physical form.
Form follows function. Discipline refines form.
The Design Bureau is fictional. The process isn’t.
The paperwork is questionable.
The design process is real.
Patterns are developed, compared, classified and refined rather than treated as interchangeable surface prints. Some work immediately. Some evolve. Some are rejected. Others reveal possibilities only after being translated onto a garment.
The same applies to colour.
A strong Pattern can take on very different personalities depending on the Palette applied to it: darker or lighter, quiet or expressive, tonal or sharply contrasted.
That means a new colourway does not have to pretend to be a completely new design.
It can simply be another expression of the same one.
Same structure. Different expression.
It started with camouflage
Camouflage remains the foundation of Scarfhold.
The interest was never limited to traditional camouflage prints. What made camouflage compelling was the design logic underlying it: visual integration, disruption, concealment without disappearance, and pattern functioning as architecture across the body. Camouflage represents not only one of the most versatile pattern types for the wardrobe but also one of the most form-flattering.
That was particularly interesting on leggings and other close-fitting garments, where pattern, movement and body shape interact constantly.
Once that way of looking at pattern existed, there was no reason to stop at camouflage.
Leaves, geological structures, mechanical forms, painterly marks, geometry, porcelain, digital noise and stranger things could all be approached with the same question:
What does this Pattern actually do?
The subject changed.
The interest in structure did not.
Pattern and colour are separate decisions
One of the central ideas behind Scarfhold is that Pattern and Palette do different jobs.
The Pattern determines structure: motif, rhythm, scale, density, direction and visual behaviour.
The Palette determines colour relationships.
Bring them together and the same Pattern can move from understated to expressive without losing the thing that made it recognisable in the first place. The internal Scarfhold system deliberately keeps those layers separate before assessing how the finished combination translates onto a garment.
This is why you may find the same Pattern appearing in several very different colour expressions across the store.
It is not duplication.
It is exploration.
Made after you order
Scarfhold uses made-to-order production rather than keeping every Pattern, Palette and garment combination sitting in finished inventory.
When you place an order, the product is sent into production through our specialist fulfilment partners. Depending on the garment, it is printed and finished for that order before being dispatched.
That production model is important to the way Scarfhold works.
A Pattern library can contain a large number of possible combinations. Producing every one of those combinations in advance would either make that range impossible or require large amounts of speculative stock.
Making products after they are ordered lets the catalogue remain broad without manufacturing every possible garment before someone has chosen it.
It also means there is a production period before your order ships. Current delivery information and estimates are shown when you order.
Designed for actual life
Leggings sit at the centre of Scarfhold because they have escaped the category they were originally assigned.
They can be activewear.
They can also be what you wear while travelling, working from home, walking around a city, running errands, meeting someone for coffee or doing very little at all.
Scarfhold currently approaches that through three core legging types:
Comfort — softer everyday wear.
Yoga — a higher-waisted, more supportive fit.
Utility — added structure and pockets.
Different tools for different days.
The gym is optional.
A catalogue, not a treadmill
Scarfhold is not intended to operate as an endless sequence of products arriving just in time to make the previous ones feel obsolete.
Patterns can stay.
Good ideas can evolve.
A Pattern can return through another Palette, move into another garment, or become part of a Capsule that places it in a completely different context.
Capsules provide room for storytelling and experimentation, while the underlying catalogue remains stable. That distinction is deliberate: the catalogue is the library; Capsules are concentrated editorial worlds built from it.
There will always be new things to discover.
They do not require everything else to disappear.
